The Nephilim are the children of the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men” (Genesis 6:1-4). Because of the unsanctioned union between the divine and the human, God shortened the lifespan of people to 120 years. Within the Yahwist worldview, there needs to be a clear boundary between humans and the divine. The Nephilim embodied the breach between these two worlds.
