The Yahwist (J) is one of four distinct hypothetical sources that can be traced from the book of Genesis to Numbers. It is called the Yahwist because it refers to God as YHWH from the beginning of creation. While its theology is clear, the dating of the source is debatable. The Yahwist conceives of an anthropomorphic deity who is concerned with the ground (‘adamah) and very involved in human choices. The biblical author does not have a high opinion of humans whose evil inclinations make them incapable of good.
